History

During the last 55 years of independent India, watching the functioning of democracy, it has emerged that there is a lack of appreciation of matters military and about vital issues concerning national security among the political class and the general public. Even those involved directly with defence and security of the nation are unaware of the grand designs of those who may harm our country's interests. This view has been shared by most of the senior civil and military officers, who felt that there was an urgent need to look at these vital issues with a holistic approach and consider, analyze and interpret current events with critical insight based on experience, expertise and scholarship for the benefit of all those connected and concerned with national security.

It was with the aim to provide a medium for such expert analysis and interpretation of current issues of defence and security that the Journal Defence Watch was launched in September 2001 at New Delhi. Its inaugural issue was released on September 2 (10 days before 9/11) by His Excellency Lt. General S.K. Sinha, PVSM, then governor of Assam, now Governor of J&K , at a function presided by Air Chief Marshal O.P. Mehra, PVSM, former Chief of the Air Staff and former Governor of Maharashtra and Rajasthan, in the presence of senior civil and military officers and academics, which included General VN Sharma, PVSM, AVSM, former Chief of the Army Staff and Admiral SM Nanda, PVSM, former Chief of the Naval Staff, among others.

The Journal from its very first issue was well appreciated by the armed forces, para-military and police organizations as well as civil government institutions, and the subscriber membership rose steadily and reached three digits in no time. However, the readership of the journal has crossed 20,000 mark as 90 percent of the subscriptions are from big libraries being used by large number of people every month.

During its 'short life of only five years, the Journal has received many letters of appreciation from top military commanders and the media. These are reproduced on another page. The Journal is being subscribed by American Embassy, Russian Embassy, Chinese University, and has received subscription also from Bangladesh. It is available for sale in most of the well-known bookshops in Delhi as well as from the Central News Agency.

The Journal was fortunate in persuading a group of very eminent persons with vast experience and expertise in their profession to be on the Editorial Advisory Board. They have not only advised and encouraged the project team but also contributed articles for the Journal, which has been the main reason for the high quality of the contents in it.

The Editor and publisher of the Journal, Air Cmde (Retd) NB Singh, was the Deputy Director at the United Service Institution of India and Editor of the USI Journal from 1987 to 1996.
